BOXTED AIRFIELD HISTORICAL GROUP

The group based in Colchester Essex was formed in the year 2000 by Richard Turner. Richard has researched the history of Boxted airfield since 1995 and starting in January 1999 staged exhibitions with the material collected.
There was a lot of local interest and he decided if this project was going to continue more help was needed, so after a meeting of enthusiasts the first committee was formed in February 2000.
Membership now stands at 150 members world wide, including a number of airfield veterans both American service men and RAF personnel, who were based at Boxted. The group holds regular meetings with guest speakers, film evenings etc. Anne the secretary organises coach trips and outings to various museums, events etc. Full details can be found on the “group events” page. Airfield Museum latest news

At last our planning application has been accepted and the building regulations regarding the site has been approved. The process has involved drawing and redrawing the plans and fine tuning them at every stage, our basic layout and ideas for the site remains unaltered, but because there was a lot of infill of rubble etc where we wanted to locate the two huts, we have swapped the position of the huts with the car park We are hoping to create a complex that will look similar to what it did in World War Two. Our thanks must got to Ron Tickner who has done all our drawings for us and saved us a considerable sum, thanks Ron.  Once we get into the new year and hopefully some reasonable weather we will commence laying the foundations.

The nissen hut we were offered has now been dismantled and moved to the museum site for storage, a small team of our members carried out this process and my thanks go to Ron, Chris Stanfield, Robin Gooding and John Fletcher for their excellent efforts. We all enjoyed the experience and the camaraderie during the work.

Our application to become a registered charity is under consideration with the charities commission.

We are in the process of completing a Lottery application for a heritage grant to hopefully fund about two thirds of the museum project, we hope to have this complete about the beginning of March, then it is 3 months wait for the decision so we should know about July 2008. In the mean time we will press on with what work we can do.

Refurbishment of airfield memorial

During 2007 a grant was given to Langham Parish Council

to repair the village war memorial, included in the application

was a request for money to refurbish the airfield memorial.

Our group was asked if we would like to be involved in the

design process, after some deliberation we suggested a wall

should be built about 5’  high around the present monument,

this was agreed by the Parish Council. The first part of the

grant was awarded in time for the initial stage of the work

to be completed in time for Remembrance Sunday.

This first stage involved encasing the original red brick monument in black granite, so it looked more like a memorial.

Carved into the granite are the names of the American units and the dates they were at Boxted, also details of the RAF use of the field.  on the 11/11/2007 we were told the rest of the grant had been received so in due course the wall will be built.
